New Building Bundesministerium des Inneren (Federal Ministry of the Interior) in Berlin

The new official seat of the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) is being erected on the northern part of the Moabiter Werder (district in the Berlin quarter of Moabit) in Central Berlin. Presently the BMI is located at three sites in Berlin. The new complex of buildings will comprise the three parts of the BMI including the Bundespolizeirevier (Federal Police) with an overall of about 1.200 employees. In addition, provision is made for economic efficiency reasons for an accommodation of Bonn BMI in case of a move to Berlin.

Due to many years of experience in the project management of extensive major projects (including federal buildings) SMV has been awarded the project management role in February 2008.

The federally owned property of approx. 31,000 m² along the railway line - which is planned for the use of the ministry (Berlin BMI) as well as it enlargement possibilities (Bonn BMI) and other federal uses in a total of 3 sections is located in immediate vicinity of the government district and the new Berlin central station. The winning design of the two-phase architectural competition was submitted by the Berlin architecture firm Müller Reimann Architekten. The design provides an ensemble of three buildings.

The sections A and B are planned for the BMI. Part A will have a usable area of approx. 30,000 m ², part B of approx. 4 500 m² and part C of about 6,000 m². Part C is planned as an independent building to the admission of other federal uses and is not followed up for the time being.

In March 2008 the preparation of the design documents began based on the competition layout of Müller Reimann architects.

Provided that the design base construction is approved by the Committee on Budgets of the German Bundestag and is released for the other planning and execution, the execution of construction work will begin in March 2011, the completion is scheduled for April 2014 and delivery to the requirement for December 2014.
