Using funds from the German government's second recovery package, SMV was commissioned with Project Controlling for the Martin-Gropius building in Berlin in August 2009.
After many years of project controlling for reconstruction and modification of listed buildings (amongst others also federal properties) SMV has a proven track record which makes us the ideal partner for coping with this challenge.
The Martin-Gropius building is one of the most important and best-known places for exhibitions in Berlin. It will undergo a partial renovation and refurbishment from September 2009 until the end of 2011. It was built by the architects Martins Gropius and Heino Schmieden in the style of the Italian Renaissance from 1877 until 1881. Designed as Museum of Decorative Arts, after World War I the building housed the Museum of Prehistory and Early History and the Collection of East Asian Art. During World War II the building got heavily damaged by bombs. The reconstruction began in 1978 under the direction of the architects Winnetou Kampmann and Ute Weström after having been declared listed monument on the initiative of Walter Gropius in 1966.
Within the scope of the currently planned partial renovation and refurbishment the following structural measures are scheduled: renovation of the roof sealing and principle cornices, installation of a photovoltaic system, reconstruction of the facade and windows, air conditioning of the 2nd floor and renovation of the wooden floors in the ground and 1st floor.
Primary aim and major challenge will be the realisation and billing of the measures within the agreed time until end of 2011 to guarantee the complete state funding of the project.
