Project description
In July 2009 SMV was commissioned with the project management for this project, using funds from the German government's second recovery package and based on a long track record regarding project management for reconstruction and modification of listed buildings (amongst others also federal properties) with the special challenge of bringing in accordance the fundamental refurbishment of modern technical facilities with the monument protection.

On the campus of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW), Berliner Tor 11 in Hamburg, the machine hall is converted into a tech-nical school. The building was built in 1928 by the architect Fritz Schumacher to serve as a machine laboratory. It is a listed monument according to the Historic Preservation Law Hamburg. The machine hall houses several reciprocating engines and technical stream ma-chines as well as measuring/test facilities, some being from the twenties of the 20th century. The current condition of the hall does not comply with the modern state of technology and the requirements of re-search and teaching mainly regarding the test facilities equipment and the functional arrangement of the test facilities and their complementally functions. Therefore a remodeling and restructuring of the hall is absolutely necessary as it will act as “showcase” of the HAW Hamburg – Department Machine Construction and Production. The building has three floors and a top floor. Only the basement and the ground floor of the north wing will be reconstructed.

The planning phase is started on schedule. The approval procedure is executed as a simplified one by Bundesimmissionsschutzgesetz (BImSchG).

Object features
gross floor area: approx. 36.400 m²

Project objektivesPrimary aim and major challenge will be the realization and billing of the measures within the agreed time until end of 2010 to guarantee the complete state funding of the project. The remodelling is to improve the competitiveness of the HAW in comparison with other Universities, e.i. the perception of the program and the performance profile. The focus of the activity is on a sustainable refitting with involvement of renewable energies.
