“He has two older brothers. That's where you learn to stand your ground, to fight for your position and to defend it; that's what makes him strong. But also team spirit, because you know that someone is behind you when it counts, but the same is also expected. Loyalty, that's it. That's good.”

Jeanette Baranowsky knows Arnd Wittchen

Determined. When he starts something, something has to be achieved; half-baked is not his thing. That's why he doesn't like it that architects sometimes get awards for designs that can't actually be built. That's why he doesn't play a bit of basketball, but becomes captain while being the shortest player. That's why he doesn't ride his racing bicycle around the block, but competes in the historic Paris-Roubaix cycling race, the 150 km version of the "Queen of the Classics". A route that is also called the "Hell of the North" not only because of its dreaded cobblestone sections. This is where Arnd Wittchen gets back on his racing bike after a serious crash with broken collarbones and ribs, this is where he confronts his initial cramping - and then pulls the thing off at full throttle, cheering on the inside. Boom! (He wouldn't say it that way, though, he's too calm for that, but you can feel it when he tells it). Honesty, fairness and a sense of responsibility are important to him. And respect for the cause - not fear, but respect; that's the right attitude, and not only for cobblestones.
