“He doesn't even know the subjunctive II. His style: Doing. Pulling through. Bringing it to an end. Pragmatic and goal-oriented. May not always be fun. But always makes sense.”

Arnd Wittchen knows Malte Emmerich

Persistent. Fire? No, not really. Fire is not the spontaneous association when you first meet Malte Emmerich. Even if in retrospect - after getting to know him better, both personally and professionally - it becomes clear that one had already sensed something back there somewhere, that there had been a glow, a quiet hidden blaze, right from the start. Whereby, hidden is the wrong word, it is not an actively hidden, no, the fire is rather concealed. Covered by the much more obvious outer layer of the tidy pragmatist, the organizing, guiding planner. Of the listening, weighing, moderating unifying former speaker of the class.

He possesses an unagitated assertiveness, a self-evident leadership strength. One follows Malte Emmerich without actually feeling it oneself, follows his announcements, his plan, simply because it makes sense. Because you feel and know that it will lead to the goal. Management by sense, not by superhero.

And then it is implemented. Followed through. Consistently and against all odds. Like the Elbe Philharmonic Hall in Hamburg, which he accompanied as the developer's representative for more than 10 years until its completion. And it is precisely here, when he talks about this great architectural vision, that it first comes into play: fire. Malte Emmerich believes in the power of the first image, the bold stroke that doesn't have to be finished, probably shouldn't even be. Here he quotes Wolf D. Prix: "Architecture must blaze."

The magic, the passion, the fire of this first image must inspire, touch, and weld everyone involved into a team. And then Malte Emmerich makes sure that it doesn't remain just a briefly excitingly blazing flash in the pan. He manages to preserve the energy, to nurture it. And even when the flames become smaller during the process, in difficult moments, perhaps even seem to have disappeared altogether, when the logs are covered with a white layer and some see only ashes, he is the glowing core that stays on. And if it takes 10 years.
