AXEL SPRINGER CAMPUS – BERLIN

A new building for the publishing house Axel Springer SE was built on the 10,000 m² site between Schützen-, Zimmer- and Jerusalemer Strasse. The total leasable area of 52,000 m², spread over 13 floors, accommodates workplaces for up to 3,500 employees. Studios, event and exhibition spaces, a staff canteen and restaurants are located on the public first floor.

Stunningly beautiful, so that we have car accidents in front of the building.
— Mathias Döpfner

The new building, which was constructed in the immediate vicinity of the existing Springer high-rise, was designed by the renowned Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas and his office OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture). The closed structure is divided diagonally into two halves by a light-flooded atrium and opens onto the existing Springer buildings. The terraced levels facing each other along this division form a "valley" in their open, architectural formation that sets the stage for informal workplaces - a place that also symbolically addresses the issues of the digital age.

The atrium, which rises up to 30 meters above the "valley," is bordered in the area of the facades by a folded glass construction that contrasts visually with the smooth, opaque, printed office facades.
